Cruising The Mexican Riviera and the Sea of Cortez

Ten days aboard the ms Ryndam of Holland America Line with Bill and Susan.

This site was published to the World Wide Web while the ms Ryndam was at sea, April 13-23, 2004. A Sony digital camera was used with a Sony laptop computer and Wi-Fi card. The vessel has a satellite link.

Digital Seas, a division of Maritime Telecommunication Network, provides internet service from ships at sea. Signals are transmitted to a satellite in geostationary orbit at an altitude of approximately 22,236 miles above the earth.
At that altitude the satellite will appear fixed above the surface of the earth, completing one orbit revolution every 24 hours, so that it is 'synchronized' with the rotation period of the earth. In providing internet service to vessels around the world Digital Seas may use as many as seven satellites.
Signals are downloaded to teleports located in California, Georgia, New Jersey, Texas, and The Netherlands.

The antenna is located is housed in a protective dome atop the Ryndam.

Below is the interior of the dome, showing the antenna.
