Emily Tanaka

Artist Statement

Painting to me is a diary of watching things grow around me. I attempt to record the colorful energy in sprouting seeds, blossoming flowers and people. My symbolic portraiture is meant to express the beauty and vitality of growing living things, to show a person's inner strength, or record a significant event in my own life.
Layering is a big part of my work and the way I think as an artist. I layer symbols, colors and materials to bring a greater dimension to the piece or to communicate a deeper message about the subject.
"The Lily Portraits" series uses the flower to help tell a story, often giving hints about the subject's personality, hopes or life experiences.
