Rescue of the mother and child
The mother and her two year old
son were rescued by United States Coast Guard Lieutenant C. G. Leisy on a rubber life raft.
High tension wires prevented lowering a rescue basket from a helicopter. Leisy
and the pilot devised this raft operation. The victim estimated she had been in
the water for seven and a half hours.
Leisy received the Silver Lifesaving Medal for this rescue and the rescue
nearby minutes later of the grandmother and second grandchild during this
operation.
