Complaint letter to Francisco Perez Pacheco
Material in italics added by me. Misspelled words not corrected.

Pacheco was a wealthy land owner in what are now the counties of San Benito, Santa Clara, and Merced. His ranchos were San Justo; Bolsa de San Felipe; Ausaymus de San Felipe, and San Luis Gonzaga. Highway 152 from Gilroy passes through his lands.

In addition to being the U. S. Consul at Monterey, Larkin was also a merchant and trader with foreign vessels and not always satisfied with what he received from suppliers.

In this letter Larkin threatens Pacheco with legal action by the Alcalde in Monterey.

April, 1843

Sir

I have rec'd on your a/c. two hundred Dollars worth of very indeferent looking Soap. I have heard you talk much about your very Superior Soap, but had known the kind you was going to send me, and how long a time I was to wait, I would not have trusted you one hundred dollars.
You have now owed me a long time, and say you owe me only Soap, (when I say you also owe me hides,) and appear to think you will send me only Soap and that when ever you see fit.
After keeping me waiting so long, you now send me only 200$ worth of Soap and that very dirty.
Your next excuse I suppose will be that its a dry season and you will have no tallow. You must remember you told me 3 or 4 times that you had all your soap ready for cutting so the dry season can make no difference.
In conclusion I have to say I do not intend to write any more to you for my own, and if you receive a letter from the Alcalde to appear in Monterey this month you must blame yourself and not me.
