4. NEW MONTGOMERY AND MARKET

This photograph was taken from the bridge that linked the Grand Hotel on the right with the Palace Hotel.  Senator Sharon's mistress, Sarah Hill, stayed at the Grand because he was afraid she would be seen at the Palace. She would cross the bridge in the dead of night to stay with him at the Palace. Her life was tragic. Read more about her and her husband, David S. Terry, in the epilogue of the Sanchez File.

The domed building above the Market Street horse car is the Masonic Temple.
Notice the light colored crosswalks. They were made of smooth cut stone so ladies wouldn't trip on the cobblestones used on streets.
