1. San Francisco City Hall

The diagonal street in front was called City Hall Avenue. Larkin Street is at left.

The greatest boondoggle in City history. Cost over $6 million and 35 years to build. It fell down and burned in one day.

Atop the dome was the statue of the Goddess of Progress. The head fell off when  the statue  was being lowered, given to some organization, then eventually sent to a City warehouse.

I wondered what happened to it and went looking for it  in the early 1970s and found it had been thrown in gratis when Knott's Berry Farm bought some cable cars.

This was shocking and I told Mayor Alioto, who got really upset. He told me to go down there and get it back.  Knott's was very nice about it and agreed to return it.

When it returned we had a nice ceremony in City Hall and Walter Knott came up.   The head is now at City Hall.
