Marcella Sembrich (Lucia)

Mme.
Sembrich's life history is a recital of burning ambitions, fierce early
struggles with poverty, fate and opposition, and eventual successes in every
portion of the globe.
Lemberg,
Austrian Poland, is her birthplace and Marcellaine Cohainski her original name.
The latter she changed on entering a stage career.
Her
extraordinary beauty of voice was discovered by Julius Epstein, famous teacher at
Vienna. The madame made her debut at Athens, in "I Puritani."
Appearances
then followed in every city of note, one triumph tramping the heels of another
in bewildering succession. Engagement at the Metropolitan Opera House came
through Abbey, Schoeffel and Grau.
Of all
the Sembrich roles, none gives finer opportunity for display of her exceptional
abilities than "Lucia."
