GROWING UP IN SAN FRANCISCO

SEALS STADIUM

by Bill Roddy

I loved the 22 street car on Fillmore.  I took it all the time. It started me on my voyage to Sutro Baths or the Marina District, or to Seals Stadium, home of the San Francisco Seals baseball team at 16th and Bryant.
Seals Stadium was cozy and friendly and warm. The Mission District had the best weather... no fog or wind.  Do you think the Seals would have built Candlestick Park?  They had more sense.
The seats were just wooden planks, at least where I sat. And they were close to the field, very intimate.
The scoreboard was operated by a real live person, no electronic  gadgets. He put numbers in slots and looked through a window.
The manager was Lefty O'Doul, a real San Franciscan, loved by all. He later had a bar and restaurant on Geary near Powell.
Joe DiMaggio was our hero.  A home town boy making good... we never thought about him playing in the big leagues.
When the NY Giants came to San Francisco they played their first two seasons at Seals Stadium.  Every game was packed.
