Bonds of the City and County of San Francisco 1851-1908 1851 City Stock, $1,635,600 @ 10% Interesting that the first debt issue of San Francisco was not a bond but a stock. This certificate is signed by two noted personages. James King of Wm. and John W. Geary, the first mayor. King, the editor of the Evening Bulletin was murdered on Montgomery Street by James Casey, a city supervisor. The Vigilance Committee hanged Casey. Geary's career was not over when he left office. He became a general in the Civil War and governor of Pennsylvania. He was considered as a Republican candidate for President. He is buried in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and his portrait hangs in the Governor's Office. I have visited both sites.
