Bonds of the City and County of San Francisco 1851-1908 1874 City Hall $750,000 These were the only bonds issued for the construction of the new City Hall near Ninth Street. The rest of the time the Board of Supervisors would make expenditures from the Treasury. The result was that the building, constructed over a 20 year period, used every type of material imaginable: brick, stone, iron. There was no central authority, no major contractor, just the appointed City Hall Commissioners. This lack of design came home to roost on April 18, 1906, when the City Hall collapsed in minutes.
