There were four places in San Francisco were persons were sent for confinement for violations of the law.
1.
The Home for the Care of the Inebriate for drunks and the
insane.
2. The Industrial School for Children.
3. The County Jail for those awaiting trial on criminal offenses.
4.The House of Correction for less serious offenses; misdemeanor drunk, petit
larceny and battery.
In 1879, there were 802 males sentenced to the House and 173 females. Seventy-six were under 18 years of age, the youngest being 13. Most sentences were under one year.
