an idle and dissolute life, 185 The youngest inmate was five, most were between ten and seventeen. Thirty six boys escaped that year, and twenty-five were captured and returned. They worked four hours a day in a shoe shop, tailor shop, laundry, bakery, carpenter shop, dining room, sewing. There was a sixty acre farm on the property. A typical breakfast was hashed meat with potatoes, bread and coffee. Lunch every day was bread and tea, supplemented with ginger bread on Sundays. Although the school had eight cows, no milk was ever served the children. |
